Central Iloilo, Churches

This Romanesque-Byzantine church is the only red stone in the region and was dedicated to Sta. Monica whose relics can be found inside and exposed for the kissing of the faithful during her feast day on the 4th day of May each year.
Fr. Policarpio Minayo built the church of bricks and wood through force labor. However, according to some records, it was Fr. Antonio Fermentino who started building the structure and was finished between 1895-1889 when Fr. Lazaro Ramirez was the parish priest.
Six equal arched windows consists the sunken balcony above the main entrance is the eye-catching image of the second level of the façade topped by a statued rectangular niche.
It was used as garrison by the Japanese forces.
It is said that the structure was copied from a church in Pavia, Italy. An Augustinian church less the front columns.

…exposed for the kissing of the faithful during her feast day on the 5th day of May each year.
the feast day of Sta. Monica is August 27, but we celebrate it every May 4, not May 5.

The annual town fiesta of Pavia in honor of Sta. Monica is held every 4th of May, however, the death of Santa Monica is commemorated on August 27th.

I hope that somebody from Pavia, Iloilo can tell me why Fr.Policarpio Minayo did not finish the building of Sta. Monica and I am also interested to know if what year he was transferred to Patnongon Antique as a Parish priest. I found out recently that he was my great-great grandfather he is the father Maria(my great grandma), Fernanda and Jose Minayo all of Patnongon Antique. All information regarding Fr. Minayo is appreciated. Thank you.
